I guess it is time for me to finally till under and start preparing for spring. My wife and I went away for the weekend to work a production of the Wizard of Oz and right before we left I found out that we were supposed to get a rare bit of snow in east texas. I covered what I had left with plastic sheeting but to no avail. Everything except for the carrots is finally dead. I did however learn that when a snow is coming I should pick anything on the plants before I cover them up and hope for the…

The use of maps has always been a feature of importance for the ag sector. In the past, watching from above was vital for the feudal lords to have an overview of their lands and for this reason they built their homes atop the hills. This was probably also significant before that.
In the last few years, GPS sof…

Seems this is slow time for gardening, but I am realizing that I should be planting much later than I did this year. The Cucumbers that came up when I tilled a spot for peas are producing just fine, and the tomatoes are growing just not getting ripe. I think next fall I need a little hot house tunnel made out of plastic sheeting and I should be able to grow much longer. Now that I had some success growing in the summer I know what I am missing when I eat store bought veggies that lack the flavor…

Nothing was salvaged from the garden- the chickens ate everything. uprooted all my rhubarb and horseradish. even had did a serious number on the strawberry plants and currant bush. will have to see what survives next spring. hopefully everything will be well fertilized! using the garden area as a winter time chicken, goose and rabbit pens.
my yard looks terrible! random buildings and an extension cord running across the whole thing.

Almost time for the indoor garden. Outside the only two items are the celery and broccoli. Everything else is done for the season. Time to work on composting.
The next project will be starting a few things inside. I will have one cherry tomato and one heirloom tomato plant. I will also try a little leaf lettuce. Will see how the indoor gardening goes.
Also I bought seeds to put up for next season outside.
This season was so abundant. Happy gardening!!!!

I can't believe it's been so long since I posted on this blog! Between garden work and laying a new hardwood floor in our living room--plus Facebook and Blogger that keep me busy--I'm just sooooooooo far behind on my garden blog.
Well, it's fall here in north central Indiana. We had lots of rain and wind over the past two days, and now most of the trees are bare, and the ground is covered with a thick mat of wet leaves. But we use one of our Farmall tractors and a big leaf sweeper to sweep up t…

I did get my garlic in before the rain. This was Spanish red garlic, a hardneck, that I saved from this year's harvest. Then I went to the Farmer's Market here and a farmer I always buy from cause he has the best heirloom tomatoes ever, gave me some garlic to plant. He said it was a variety that had been found growing wild in Washington State - so we'll see how it does here, The heads weren't very large but I can use some of them anyway. The rest of the garden has been sown in Crimson Clover so…

It has been so wet the ground couldn't be worked. Finally today is was dry enought and so today we can plant turnips and kale before the rain hits again this evening. Don't think I can get the garlic in though since I am at work all day. We took little Ty out to the garden for the first time in a while and he looked confused since it is all GONE..

Didn't really watch this closely, although I should have, given the subject matter ( I like Castle). Apparently there was a murder and an attempted murder. What was interesting was the murder was from E. coli. The gang had to track down the source of the E. coli and found it in a lettuce field that was being contaminated from water run-off from a cattle ranch. First mystery solved. (At least this contamination was very visible).
Second mystery: The attempted murder victim didn't have E. coli po…

Well, my garden didn't do as well as I would've liked this year. Squash bugs completely destroyed my zucchini, yellow squash, and other squash whose names I can't remember.... We also got a lot of rain, so maybe that's why the plants actually grew beautifully, but we didn't get much in the way of production. (minus the white current tomatoes - they grew like craaaazy!!!) I know we didn't over fertilize.
The fun part was that I did get enough basil to make enough pesto to freeze and use through…

A few weeks ago I planted I riped out the dead cucumber vines from the trellis in the middle of my garden so I could plant peas on each side. The peas have been growing nicely along with the carrots and brussel sprouts and should be reaching the trelllis in a few days. I haven't checked on them much, but I went out today to see if they were ready to start working up the wire fence I use for the trellis.
Apparently when I tilled the bed and planted the peas I released some ungerminated cucumber…

Really, three years. Crap. This is the kinda stuff I needed to know three years ago. I moved to the country four years ago so by now I should be enjoying a tasty crop, but instead I got three years to wait. I just found this out about ten minutes ago and I am not happy.

The bottle neck gourds we planted have finally started to dry up and fall off the vine. I'm pretty sure that your supposed to just let them sit there until they are completely dry, but I think I should have left more of the stem attached. I left it sitting on a chair on our front porc…
